Fight Inequality Alliance (FIA) Pakistan stands in solidarity with people of Azad Kashmir region who are demanding action on increases in the cost of flour, electricity, and sharing of profits from the region’s hydropower.
FIA is concerned with reports in the Guardian and elsewhere that more than 30 people were killed during a peaceful march Monday 28 June.
Protestors are calling for urgent action on the soaring cost of living, fair access to electricity, protection of human rights, and stronger public services including education and healthcare.
The internet has been shut down in the region preventing millions of people access to information and communication and silencing their demands for dignity, affordable living, and an end to the entrenched privileges of economic elites.
“Kashmir is a resource‑rich region, yet its people live in hardship. Unemployment is high, public services such as education and healthcare are failing, the cost of living keeps climbing and electricity tariffs have priced out many households despite the region generating surplus power that is exported elsewhere,” said FIA Pakistan National Coordinator, Haris Khan.
“We call for communications to be restored, so the urgent needs in the region can be met, and for action to cut the fast rising costs that people across the region and the whole country are facing on a daily basis.” added Khan.
